Review – PHB Ethical Beauty Skin Brightener Bio-Gel

As a woman of colour, my number one skin concern is hyperpigmentation – the overproduction of melanin in the skin.

Darker skin is more prone to pigmentation due to increased level of melanin in our skin. A number of factors can cause an increase in melanin production, the main ones includes sun exposure, hormonal changes and skin injuries like cuts, burns and acne.

During my teens and early twenties I suffered from severe acne and unfortunately I was always picking at my spots. This led to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – skin trauma caused by acne, eczema, psoriasis, cuts or burns. Essentially during the healing process the skin overcompensates by increasing the production of melanin and my skin was left darkened with acne scars.

I’m a huge fan of PHB Ethical Beauty and I’ve been putting their new ‘Skin Brightening Bio-gel‘ to the test.

Let me start off by mentioning the gorgeous eco-friendly packaging.  The FSC Certified outer box and glass bottles are 100% recyclable.  The pump and cap however are not recyclable.

The glass airless pump bottle makes it easy to dispense the product.

I’ve been using this gel for a few weeks in my morning and evening routine. The gel has a thin consistency and is easy to apply. A little goes a long way, I just need 1-2 pumps. I rub the gel between my palms, taking a moment to inhale and enjoy the beautiful refreshing and uplifting scent before massaging into my skin.

The divine scent of this product comes from the precious Neroli flower oil, which is believed to encourage feelings of confidence, strength, courage, joy and peace. We’ve combined this delicate floral with refreshing Grapefruit Immortelle essential oils to awaken & enliven your skin and senses. Rounded off with grounding Vetivert and restorative Petitgrain, chosen to re-energise your spirit and also calm your mind.

It absorbs well and doesn’t leave any sticky or greasy residue. Now I’ve noticed my skin is brighter and smoother. I wasn’t expecting my acne scars to suddenly fade overnight but I’m hoping with continued use it will even out my skin tone and I’ll see some improvement with my hyperpigmentation.
