My Natural Hair Journey

My natural hair journey began in 2011. My hair was chemically straightened (relaxed) when I was about 10 years old.  I guess back in the day kinky curly hair was hard to cope with on a daily basis!

Now having a chemical relaxer wasn’t all that great, my scalp is sensitive and I remember the burning sensation while it was applied and begging for it to be rinsed off!  I always ended up with scalp burns.  But as I got older I figured ‘there is no beauty without pain’.

So over the years, I had straight hair or wore a straight weave.

Then in January 2011, when Josiah was around 3 months old my hair started falling off, I mean it was bad, I had bald patches in several places. I tried various treatments and nothing worked, so after a consultation with my hair stylist, I told her to just chop it all off!

I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, my hair had been relaxed for about 25 years.  Please note I’m not knocking anyone who has a chemical relaxer.  Its your hair and personal choice.

When I finally had my hair all chopped off, I didn’t feel confident rocking my natural hair so as soon as I left the saloon, I went to buy a wig.  Honestly I thought I looked ugly without my long relaxed hair and I really struggled to embrace it.  In fact I didn’t take any pictures of my newly natural hair.

So I wore a wig for almost a year.  I slowly realised that my relaxed hair products didn’t work well with natural hair so I had to start from scratch.  I didn’t know where to start, so I turned to YouTube and was inundated with natural hair videos and tutorials.

I finally decided to ditch my wig and try to embrace my natural hair.  As I’ve watched my hair grow,  I’m learning to love and embrace the versatility my natural hair has.  I also think it’s important for my daughter to learn to love her hair as it naturally grows from her head.

In my quest for natural hair products, I became a product junkie haha. Obviously there are tons of products out there and in my early days I didn’t know what products would work for my hair, so I just kept buying new products. My hubby wasn’t impressed at all!

Now I’ve found some staples which I’m sticking to and I also love to make my own hair butters.  I like to get my hair goodies from these websites:
