DIY Bentonite Clay Mask

Bentonite Clay is a natural healing clay known for its ability to help draw toxins out of the body.  It is harvested from naturally occurring volcanic ash and contains high levels of trace minerals including silica, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, and potassium.

A good quality Bentonite clay is gray or beige in color, very fine, odourless and non-staining.

When mixed with liquid, it rapidly swells open like a highly porous sponge.

Dr. Robert T. Martin is a mineralogist and one of America´s outstanding authorities on bentonite. According to his research, Bentonite clay has a large and varied mineral content.  It has a negative electrical attraction for positively charged particles. In the human body, various toxic poisons are positively charged.  These toxins are irresistibly drawn towards the clay. The very minuteness of the particles of Bentonite gives a large surface area in proportion to the volume used, thus enabling it to pick up many times its weight in positively charged particles.

2 Ways with Bentonite Clay

  • Hair shampoo
  • Face mask

*Do not use metal utensils or containers to stir or store Bentonite clay powder. Contact with metal may decrease the clay’s potency.

Use to cleanse and clarify the hair without making it feel dry or stripped.  It helps to remove buildup from your hair and scalp due to its ability to attract and bind impurities.

I alternate mixing my clay with aloe vera juice or apple cider vinegar/water (for a deep cleanse)

Bentonite Clay Hair Shampoo (with Aloe Vera Juice)

What you’ll need:

*Note this measurement will vary depending on your hair thickness and length.  Make sure you use equal amounts of clay and liquid

Step 1: Mix your clay

Combine Bentonite Clay and Aloe Vera Juice in a bowl.  Leave for 5 minutes (this allows the clay to absorb the liquid and swell)

Stir well with a plastic spoon until smooth

Bentonite Clay Hair Shampoo (with Apple Cider Vinegar and water)

What you’ll need:

1/2 cup Bentonite clay

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar/water

Combine Bentonite Clay and apple cider vinegar/water in a bowl.  The mixture will fizz  (this is normal)

Leave for 5 minutes (this allows the clay to absorb the liquid and swell)

Stir well with a plastic spoon until smooth

 Step 2: Apply to hair

  • Wet and section hair in 4 sections( this helps to ensure all of your strands are coated).
  • Apply the clay to each section of hair including your scalp
  • Cover your hair with a plastic shower for 15-20 minutes
  • Rinse with lukewarm water ensuring all the clay is rinsed from the hair
  • Follow with a deep conditioner, rinse and style your hair

Face Mask

Used as a face mask it helps to draw out impurities and toxins, increase blood flow and boost circulation.

  • Heals and regenerates skin tissue
  • Draws out toxins
  • Helps treat and prevent acne
  • Unclogs pores
  • Prevents blackheads
  • Reduces the appearance of scars
  • Exfoliates the skin
  • Helps even out skin tone
  • Leaves skin smooth and soft
  • Radiant and glowing skin

  • Mix 1-2 tablespoons Bentonite clay with equal amounts apple cider vinegar or water until it’s a smooth paste.
  • Apply to face and leave on for 15-20 minutes (normal skin) 5-10 minutes (sensitive skin). You will feel a tightening sensation.
  • Wash your face with warm water, follow with your regular toner and moisturiser.

For best results, use once a week.
