Review – Terranova Green Child Sneaky Greens Super Shake

My kids are super fussy eaters, truth be told I was an annoying fussy eater as a kid.

Honestly meal times are like hostage negotiations! If Josiah had his own way he would happily eat just carbs all day, everyday.  And he has to have raisins with every meal including his dinner… I can’t get over eating spaghetti bolognese with raisins!

He will only manage protein (chicken, beef) if it’s finely shredded in a sauce.  No yoghurt, cheese or milk and till today he’s never tasted ice-cream (ok maybe that’s a good thing lol).

Annaliese is more adventurous and loves her ‘protein’, she would happily chow down chicken on the bone, she loves yoghurt and ice-cream.  Total opposites!

When it comes to veggies, they are both the same.  I can usually negotiate with Annaliese, but as much as I try to convince Josiah to eat veg or drink freshly juiced greens, he won’t budge!

As a parent I want my kids to adopt healthy eating habits which is not often easy, so we give them various supplements, they are quite used to having probiotics, fish oil and vitamins.

I’m a huge fan of TerraNova  and regularly use their supplements so I decided to purchase their Sneaky Greens Super Shake for my little munchkins.

Spirulina – Spirulina plankton is one of nature`s richest sources of plant pigments (such as chlorophyll, carotenoids and phycocyanin) and highly digestible protein (typically more than 55%), as well as providing vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and other compounds vital to life (i.e. the powerful antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase [SOD]).
Green Barley Grass – Barley grass contains a wide array of important health-giving compounds including chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments, easily digested protein (approximately 30%), fibre, vitamins, minerals and several important enzymes (such as the potent antioxidant superoxide dismutase [SOD]).
Acai Berry – Acai is one of the highest ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) value fruits with signiificant concentrations of vitamin E, anthocyanin flavonoids, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and other antioxidant compounds. Acai berries also yield a remarkably high quantity of fatty acids and fibre.
Kale – Kale is a good source of many nutrients, with carotenoids and sulphur-rich antioxidants such as sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol being among the most important.
Watercress – A true superfood, the levels of so many important nutrients in watercress range from good to excellent – most notably carotenoids, flavonoids, glucosinolates (which convert into isothiocyanates), vitamins A and C, folic acid, vitamin K, calcium and iron.
Blackberry – Blackberries are among the highest ORAC rated antioxidant fruits and are a potent source of anthocyanin flavonoids and carotenoids (i.e. zeaxanthin, lutein, beta carotene and cryptoxanthin).
Black Raspberry – Black raspberries also rate very high in ORAC value, with potent antioxidant flavonoids and carotenoids being especially prominent. This fruit has a particularly high level of lutein and alpha carotene.

The first time I gave it to my kids I started off with 1/2 a scoop to see how they got on and then gradually increased to recommended dosage.  I normally mix it with some juice as my kids are not really into smoothies yet.

It mixes well and actually tastes nice (I like it too), thanks to the natural sweetness from the lucuma and berries.  It certainly beats me trying to get them to drink my freshly juiced super greens!

They have been using this supplement for 3 months and it has definitely helped improve their overall health.

A few weeks back Annaliese picked up a tummy bug from school,  it was awful, she was vomiting and had diarrhoea.  She couldn’t eat anything all day so I had to ensure she had lots of fluid.  So all she had was ‘sneaky greens’ mixed with water.  Thankfully the symptoms only lasted 1 day and she was back to normal!
