Daughter Of The Soil is a pioneering British-Blended, African-Heritage brand founded by Maria Magembe and Hellen Lawuo-Meena that is inspired and driven by the benefits of nature, wholeheartedly embracing the goodness that comes from the soil.

The name “Daughter of the Soil” is a phrase that my father often used to describe his four daughters, and it’s a phrase I am still fond of. Growing up in the diaspora, it reminded me of my Ugandan heritage, a landscape that is green and where the soil is immensely fertile –  Maria Magembe – CEO, Daughter of the Soil.

Maria became inspired to build a large-scale ethical skin care business that honours her great-grandmother Onyang who believed in the benefits of nature.

Despite being widowed at a very young age, Onyang was a focused, enterprising woman who created and sold shea-based products within her community for the treatment of dry skin conditions and beauty care.

Maria’s dream is to continue her legacy of nurturing natural beauty and use their brand to showcase African botanical oils to the world, so that they too can benefit from Africa’s treasures.  Powered by time-tested African botanical oils rich in nutrients that hydrate, nourish and regenerate the skin.

I love their brand philosophy – to give back to the earth and communities celebrating the natural treasures within our rich soils.

Connect the DOTS‘ is their certified functional training program for women in agriculture with a goal to have 10 million DOTS certified women farmers in Africa by 2025.  Their pledge is to make a real difference to the lives and future of African rural women – providing them with an ability to earn a sustainable and protected income.

Building a sustainable program will create a movement of ‘DOTS certified’ women farmers, trainers and leaders – serving today as well as future generations.

I remember watching the ladies on ‘Dragon’s Den’ and being very intrigued.  I’ve had them on my radar since then.  Well earlier this month, I came across a birthday promotion they were running on their website, it was for a whopping 70% off everything!

I decided it would be the best time to try out their products so I treated myself to the Bag and Beauty Set.  It was a huge bargain as I paid £28 (£4 p+p).

This is a really lovely body lotion, the texture is light and it absorbs well into my skin.  What’s also great is it leaves my skin moisturised without any greasy residue.  The scent of white mulberry is quite fresh and unique and I really like it.

Used for generations, Shea Butter is highly valued across Africa for its extraordinary moisturising properties and softening effects on the skin. The rarer East African Nilotica Shea butter is even more luxurious in its texture and boasts a more impressive composition than conventional shea butter making it ideal for nourishing dry skin.

Now this is what I was most excited to try.  I love shea based butters for my skin.  The texture of this butter is rich and feels silky on my skin.  My skin definitely needs a bit more hydration so I like to use body butters in the winter.

I like to apply this straight after a bath or shower on damp skin to lock in the moisture.  It literally melts into my skin leaving it soft, smooth and moisturised.  Again my skin is delicately scent with the gorgeous scent of white mulberry.

Now the prices of these products are rather hefty for me and I can’t personally see myself spending £32 on a body butter or £26 for the lotion!

With that being said they are more of a luxurious treat and will last ages.
